Social Worker

Washington, DC - Full Time

We are seeking Social Workers to join our teams across the US supporting the Department of Veterans Affairs. Social Work responsibilities include assessing psychosocial problems that cause distress, often impacting the health condition and creating barriers to care. These stressors can include adjustment to the current medical condition, untreated or under-treated mental health or substance abuse conditions, economic instability, legal problems, and inadequate housing and transportation. Referrals typically originate from any member of the interdisciplinary team, from Veterans and/or their families who call or walk in for assistance, and from community professionals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develops an assessment of the Veteran in collaboration other service providers, the Veteran, and family members.
  • Develops the treatment plan and sets achievable treatment goals with the Veteran/family and treatment team.
  • Provides compassionate care to Veterans with serious medical and psychiatric problems through crisis intervention, counseling, and/ or referral.
  • Highly developed professional, clinical and advanced practice skills are routinely used to treat Veterans with complex problems.
  • Educates the Veteran and/or caregiver on the available services and assists them in establishing the appropriate referrals based on the Veteran's preference.
  • Acts as an advocate when it serves the best interest of the Veteran/family.
  • Educates and encourages the Veteran/family to advocate on their own behalf, thus fostering a sense of independence and empowerment.
  • Makes rapid assessments and develops crisis management plans for admission to mental health in Veteran programs.
  • Refers Veterans/families to the appropriate other service providers for identified health education needs.
  • Provides Veterans and their caregivers with ongoing supportive counseling.
  • Collaborates in the performance improvement processes and complies with performance measures as required by the Veterans Affairs for their specific population and/or program.

Experience/Certification Required:

  • Must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level.
  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) is preferred.

Education Required:

  • Have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the School of Social Work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the master's degree in social work. Verification of the degree can be made by going to http://www.cswe.org/Accreditation to verify that the social work degree meets the accreditation standards for a masters of social work.

Physical Requirements:

  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
  • Work involves sitting and standing for prolonged periods of time.
  • May require bending, stooping and lifting to 15 lbs.

Other Special Qualifications:

  • US Citizen or Permanent Resident Card is required.
  • Must relocate to project site for the duration of the contract.
  • Pass/possess VA Public Trust Clearance
